Choosing A Good Personal Trainer

If you hire a personal trainer to help you achieve your fitness goals, you should pay attention to a few things to ensure you choose the right one. If you have a great trainer, you'll be much more likely to stick with their recommendations and reach your goals, but the wrong trainer can make that much less likely. Here are some examples of things you should pay attention to so you choose the right personal trainer:

Education

A good personal trainer goes through an education process to become certified and adequately prepared for their role. Physical fitness and dieting are based on science, and you need to hire a trainer who has an education in those subjects, so they train you using verified methods. Before you hire anyone, ask for their credentials to ensure they're properly educated.

Experience

Education is vital, but it also helps to find a personal trainer with real-world experience in training, and it helps if you're not their first client. All jobs have a learning curve, and trainers are no exception. If you can choose between a trainer who's just become certified and one who's been training folks for ten years, you should choose the more experienced one.

Availability

If your trainer is busy and it's hard for them to find time for you, that might mean they're good at what they do and their services are in high demand. However, you need your trainer to be available when you need them, or you might be more likely to give up on your diet and exercising—emotional support is a big part of their job.

Personality

You don't necessarily need to find a personal trainer with a personality that you like, but they need to be approachable and nonintimidating to increase your odds of succeeding. You should feel comfortable enough to call them up when you're going through something that might prevent you from working out or eating right.

Fact-Based Approach

There are so many diet fads and lots of misinformation about the best ways to exercise. If your personal trainer subscribes to any of these methods, they may not be right for you. You must choose a trainer who approaches diet and exercise from a fact-based position and won't feed you information that will hurt you rather than help you.
